Vicks for a cough - myth or fact?

I've read in several places that if you put Vicks VapoRub on the bottoms of your feet, with socks to cover it, it will stop a cough at night. I checked it out on Snopes, and they label it as undetermined.

I've had a persistent, miserable cough for two and half months that I can't seem to clear up.  So last night I ran to the store and bought some Vicks. What could it hurt, right? I applied it liberally to the bottoms of my feet, put on my socks, and crawled into bed. Let me tell you, it sure heats up the bottoms of your feet!

The result: it didn't eliminate my cough, but it was definitely better than it's been in a long time. I only woke up twice coughing, and the coughing stopped very quickly. So, I think I'll continue to use it until I have another bad night. Maybe it worked, maybe it was just a placebo effect. Who knows?

  1. i'll take a placebo effect if it lessens the problem.

  2. So funny. I have never heard of this remedy, I agree with Beth though, If it works for you, placebo or not, it is worth doing in order to get a better nights sleep!
